Mandatory Internship
Internship Requirements
The Master's degree program in Exercise Science and Training includes a mandatory internship. The exact requirements for the internship are specified in the module catalog. You can find them here on page 22: MHB1-en-88-l69-H-2023.pdf
Internship Requirements:
- Duration: The internship must last approximately eight weeks. As the internship is worth 10 ECTS credits (1 ECTS = approximately 25-30 hours of work), the total workload should amount to approximately 250-300 hours. This corresponds to about 31.2-37.5 hours per week over an eight-week period.
- Placement: The internship should be completed at an institution operating in the fields of health-related sport, recreational sport, fitness sport, and/or competitive sport. In general, we accept a broad range of sport-related organizations and institutions.
- Scientific Institutions: Internships at scientific or research institutions are also possible.
- Location: The internship may be completed either in Germany or abroad.
Please note that there is no fixed or mandatory number of working hours. The calculation above is intended as a guideline to ensure that the internship workload is roughly equivalent to 10 ECTS credits. You may complete fewer hours per week and extend the internship over a longer period, as long as the total workload amounts to approximately 250-300 hours.
The internship can also be divided between two different host organizations, subject to approval and provided that both placements are relevant to the objectives of the internship.
The internship supervisor is not required to hold any specific qualifications, and there are no prescribed tasks or duties that must be completed during the internship.
However, the internship must be completed in a genuine professional environment and should involve real workplace activities, professional responsibilities, and interaction with colleagues and other staff members.
The following activities cannot be recognized as an internship:
- Independent projects conducted without integration into a professional work environment.
- Activities that are purely recreational or undertaken as a hobby.
- Personal sports training or participation in sports competitions.
- Activities that do not take place within a professional organization or institution.
- Positions classified as mini-jobs ("Minijobs") or work performed solely as an exercise instructor ("Übungsleiter") without broader professional responsibilities (e.g., Coaching a recreational sports team as a volunteer or part-time coach, particularly when the activity is limited to one or two training sessions per week.
